AAHS is honored to welcome Dr. Jarvis R. GivensProfessor of Education and Professor of African and African American Studies at Harvard University, for our 2026 Black History Month keynote program. A leading scholar of African American educational history, Dr. Givens is the author of Fugitive Pedagogy: Carter G. Woodson and the Art of Black Teaching, a groundbreaking work that reshaped understanding of Black teaching traditions and their role in the Black freedom struggle. He is also a co-founder of the Black Teacher Archive, a national digital initiative dedicated to preserving the intellectual and pedagogical traditions of Black educators across generations.

Dr. Givens’s forthcoming book, I’ll Make Me a World: The 100-Year Journey of Black History Month, will anchor the program. Drawing on archival research, personal reflection, and the voices of Black educators and students, the book traces the evolution of Black History Month from its 1926 founding to its enduring place in public life.

We look forward to welcoming you for this meaningful community gathering.
