The Extraordinary Story of the Tuskegee Airmen: A Virtual Black History Event

On Thursday, October 26, 2023, the African American Historical Society of Rockland County and the Finkelstein Memorial Library co-hosted a virtual Black History Month event, The Extraordinary Story of the Tuskegee Airmen. This enlightening program featured Jeffrey Urbin, Education Specialist and Director of the Pare Lorentz Film Center at the Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum.

In this engaging online presentation, Urbin recounted the inspiring story of the Tuskegee Airmen, a trailblazing group of Black aviators who overcame systemic racism and discrimination to make critical contributions to World War II. As skilled pilots and servicemen, they not only downed enemy aircraft but also shattered racial barriers, paving the way for greater equality in the U.S. military and beyond.

Jeffrey Urbin brought depth to the presentation, drawing from his extensive knowledge and work at the Roosevelt Library in Hyde Park, New York. The Library, home to the legacy of Franklin D. Roosevelt, preserves the history of the critical events of the 20th century, including the efforts of marginalized groups who contributed to America’s progress during his presidency.

This joint virtual event underscored the mission of both the African American Historical Society and the Finkelstein Memorial Library to educate and inspire the community by celebrating stories of resilience and achievement.

Stay tuned for the exciting lineup of 2025 Black History Month events, where we’ll continue to explore and honor the rich tapestry of African American history.
